***GIVEAWAY*** and Review of Shadow by the Bridge by Suzanne Zewan

Shadow by the BridgeShadow by the Bridge by Suzanne Zewan
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Imagine the horror of being a child, out by the river as night descends, witnessing close up and personally, a brutal murder taking place. And then being seen by the killer! And that is just how the story begins! Suzanne Zewan’s Shadow by the Bridge only builds in horror as atrocities continue to happen around young Fritz. This is a good read for fans of Ana Brazil’s Fanny Newcomb and the Irish Channel Ripper.

Publication Date: November 1, 2017
No Frills Buffalo
eBook & Paperback; 368 Pages
ISBN-13: 9780998881188
Genre: Historical Mystery
11-year-old Fritz Reynolds recalled his father telling him that man is the only creature who can find amusement in killing. Little did he realize that those words would become the theme for his teenage years growing up in the rural hamlet of Linden, New York. In this coming-of-age story, Fritz takes us back to a simpler time when neighbors gathered at the general store to listen to radio shows, drank barrel-aged cider, and worshiped at the Baptist church every Sunday. All was picturesque in his close-knit farming community until terror was unleashed on them.

Review of Every Single Secret by Emily Carpenter

Every Single SecretEvery Single Secret by Emily Carpenter
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

How have I not read Emily Carpenter before? Her latest, Every Single Secret, is creepy at its finest! This psychological thriller is about Daphne and Heath, an engaged couple who go to a secluded mountain retreat for couples therapy. Their relationship has always been superficial, as they each have secrets to hide. After Heath begins suffering from nightmares about his past, he insists they must go on the retreat in order to save their relationship. Daphne agrees to go, but not to attend therapy. She is especially put off by their host’s very strange rules, which she ignores. While Heath endures intense therapy, Daphne goes on a snooping adventure that leads to a fight for her life. The reader will be shocked by the secrets that emerge.

Review of On A Cold Dark Sea by Elizabeth Blackwell

On a Cold Dark SeaOn a Cold Dark Sea by Elizabeth Blackwell
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I’m fascinated with stories that center around the sinking of the Titanic. On A Cold Dark Sea by Elizabeth Blackwell is a well written book chronicling the stories of three fictional women who escaped a watery death that night. This is a fast paced read and perhaps that is why I did not connect with the characters as well as I would’ve liked. However, I was still entertained by the story and would recommend it to others who have a similar interest in stories about the Titanic.

Return to Bella Terra (The Italian Chronicles, #3)Return to Bella Terra by MaryAnn Diorio
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

MaryAnn Diorio stays true to the high emotion and deep faith of the previous two novels in this trilogy. Main character, Maria, finds herself having to let go of the things she holds onto most dearly. I especially loved seeing her son grow up and find his own way throughout these novels. Well done!

Return to Bella Terra by Maryann Diorio

Publication Date: October 26, 2017
TopNotch Press
Paperback & eBook; 242 Pages
Series: The Italian Chronicles, Book Three
Genre: Historical Fiction/Religious
A mother, her son, and the man who threatens to come between them . . . When Maria Landro Tonetta receives word that Mama is terminally ill, Maria travels to her Sicilian homeland with her son Nico. She finds herself yearning for the life she once knew as a child on Bella Terra, the family farm, now on the verge of bankruptcy. Caught between two worlds, Maria dreams of moving back to Sicily with her husband and children to save the farm. When Nico’s biological father unexpectedly appears at Mama’s funeral, Maria faces a new enemy to her dream. But is there an even greater enemy within her own soul?
"Each book in the Italian Chronicles series made me want to read the next one. Now I would like to see another spin-off series dealing with the next generation. The characters in MaryAnn Diorio's book feel so real. They have flaws. They seek better relationships. They suffer and they rejoice. Just like us. There are people in their lives who help strengthen their faith, and there are those who undermine their faith. In this third book, Maria has to face letting go of many things, and only through seeking God first can she do that. Along with messages of faith and family, Return to Bella Terra takes you to Italy, and the vicarious experience is wonderful. Diorio sprinkles just enough Italian words (in italic) throughout the text to give you the sense of being there. You can smell the food, hear the music, and see the beautiful countryside. I highly recommend this series and any other books written by MaryAnn Diorio.” - Claudia Cuddy, Former Professor of Communications

A Sicilian Farewell (The Italian Chronicles Book 2)A Sicilian Farewell by MaryAnn Diorio
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Following God’s call for his life, Luca and his family immigrate from Italy to America. Luca’s decision to do so is a difficult one. His wife’s heart will always be with her beloved Bella Terra and he is ripping her from all she knows. However, due to political circumstances, Sicily is struggling and Luca is barely eking out a living. From Sicily, America seemed like the promised land, one of great opportunity for his business and growth. But once there, Luca is faced with struggle, strife, and great hardship. I love the undercurrent of faith throughout Maryann Diorio’s writing. Luca’s faith is what keeps him going, even in the direst of circumstances. Book 2 of this series does not disappoint! These characters have found a place in my heart and I cannot wait to continue their story in Return to Bella Terra.

Her sister, Tracy, is irresponsible and takes off to another state with her boyfriend. When Tracy returns with her young son, Meghan knows that there is something not quite right with the child. Yet her mother and sister are in denial. It is up to Meghan to convince them to seek treatment. Meghan’s lovable dog plays a key role in helping this to happen, and in sparking the relationship between Meghan and a potential beau, the town’s new veterinarian. Wrapped in the StarsWrapped in the Stars by Elena Mikalsen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wrapped in the Stars by Elena Mikalsen is a novel that wraps the reader in fairy lights and sprinkles of magic. This is one of my favorite books! Maya is in the midst of crisis. She is a medical resident who has taken leave after a tragedy occurred for which she blames herself. She is also dealing with her guilt over her sister’s death many years ago. Maya has traveled to Scotland and finds herself lost. A little bird seems to call to her and as she follows it, she comes across a small shop. A ring in the window calls to her heart and she knows she must purchase it. She feels compelled to discover the identity of the ring’s original owner, especially as she begins to have flashbacks of someone else’s past. This mystery leads her to Paris, where she meets David and feels an instant connection. She travels to Switzerland where she discovers that she and David have more of a connection than originally thought. Readers will swoon over the love story that unfolds in the present, as well as one that took place in the past. Mikalsen flawlessly transports the reader back in time and makes history come alive. After having a dream about the ring’s former owner, Maya quickly realizes that there is a mystery associated with the ring, and it was not an accident that she was led to buy it. **GIVEAWAY** and Review of The Madonna of Pisano by Mary Ann Diorio

The Madonna of PisanoThe Madonna of Pisano by MaryAnn Diorio
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved this book! The Madonna of Pisano by Mary Ann Diorio examines the life of a young woman in Sicily in the late 1800’s. Family values and reputation is everything. Maria Landro’s family owns a thriving produce business at their beloved Bella Terra. Maria is set to marry Carlo, her sweetheart. However, tragedy strikes when the priest she works for rapes her, resulting in Maria becoming pregnant. Her fiancee leaves her. Her family’s reputation is ruined and six years later, is on the brink of bankruptcy. Maria loves her son more than anything and is appalled when as he starts school, he is shamed as she has been during this entire time. She finds friendship with the local tailor but knows he will not entertain more. She must convince the priest to publicly confess what he did to her so that her reputation and business can be saved. Diorio ensconces the reader in an Old World Italian feel. Her characters (with the exception of the priest!) are extremely likeable and the reader will find her/himself hoping they will persevere!

Review of Distress Signals by Catherine Ryan Howard

Distress SignalsDistress Signals by Catherine Ryan Howard
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This was an entertaining book about a man's quest to find out the fate of his missing girlfriend. Reminiscent of The Woman in Cabin 10, fans of that book will likely enjoy the twists found in this one.

Review of Simply Irresistible by Rachel Gibson

Simply Irresistible (Chinooks Hockey Team, #1)Simply Irresistible by Rachel Gibson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book is such a cute love story that includes a runaway bride plus a one-night stand with a hockey player that results in the birth of a cute and witty little girl. I normally get bored with straight romantic fiction without a mystery involved, but the characters in this one were so well written that I felt that I knew them and was quite entertained by their antics. I can't wait to read the follow up, The Art of Running in Heels!

Presevero Press
Hardcover; ISBN-13: 978-0996904032
eBook; ISBN 978-0-9969040-5-6
Series: The Darling Dahlias, Book 7
Genre: Historical Mystery
NYT bestselling author Susan Wittig Albert returns to Depression-era Darling, Alabama...where the ladies of the Dahlias, the local garden club, are happy to dig a little dirt! In the seventh book of this popular series, it looks like the music has ended for Darling’s favorite barbershop uiquartet, the Lucky Four Clovers—just days before the Dixie Regional Barbershop Competition. Another unlucky break: a serious foul-up in Darling’s telephone system—and not a penny for repairs. And while liquor is legal again, moonshine isn’t. Sheriff Buddy Norris needs a little luck when he goes into Briar Swamp to confront Cypress County’s most notorious bootlegger. What he finds upends his sense of justice. Once again, Susan Wittig Albert has told a charming story filled with richly human characters who face the Great Depression with courage and grace. She reminds us that friends offer the best of themselves to each other, community is what holds us together, and luck is what you make it. Bonus features: Liz Lacy’s Garden Gate column on “lucky” plants, plus the Dahlias’ collection of traditional Southern pie recipes and a dash of cookery history.
